THE MAGNIFIER - Electronic Newsletter Issue #11, September 8, 2001
Produced by: Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 9752, San Jose, CA 95157 http://www.eyesight.org
CONTENTS
1. NEW & IMPROVED WEB SITE
=====================================
This issue of the MAGNIFIER features the FOUNDATION's new web site. We thank all of you that made recommendations. Here is a summary of changes and improvements that should
make your surfing experience easier and more productive.
NAVIGATION The site is now formatted to imitate a book, complete with a "Table of Contents" and Chapters. Visitors may choose to reference
the "Table of Contents" from each Chapter or jump directly to other sections of the site by using a drop-down menu located in the header of each page. In addition, we've placed a Search Engine on the "Table of
Contents" page to help you quickly locate specific information that may be buried deep within the site.
READABILITY We've always used a tan background that maximizes reading comfort for most people. But for the
new site, we also bolded all fonts to improve readability. If you require larger letters, remember that all modern browsers allow you to adjust the font size.
CONTENT All content has been transferred to the new
site, but it has been re-organized. You may still test your eyes for signs of macular degeneration, review scientific reports, see animated representations of eye conditions (Chapt 3: PICTORIALS) and CHAT with others, but we
attempted to organize everything in a way that makes it easier for first-time visitors.
New content added since our last newsletter includes:
1] a personal story in the REPORTS section called
"Slipping Into Darkness", by Dennis C. Martin
2] a book review in the NEWS section called "Driving With Confidence"
LATEST NEWS One
of the most exciting additions to the site is our NEWS page. You may visit this page as often as you like to access the latest news regarding macular degeneration. Our news service reviews over 2000 online publications each
day and displays the top 20 stories. Although it can not distinguish between true science and media hipe, it provides a valuable resource for those of you that try to keep abreast of all developments. We ask that you
use discernment when evaluating the information and check with your doctor if you have any questions.
NEWSLETTER Our electronic newsletter is sent to thousands of subscribers and more are added each day. From
time to time we receive requests from subscribers to change their email address in our database. Actually, our system is set up to allow subscribers to delete and add their own email addresses without our intervention.
Simply visit the NEWSLETTER page and make the necessary changes. You should receive a confirming email within a minute or two.
MACULAR DEGENERATION RESEARCH FUND You'll notice a reference to the Macular
Degeneration Research Fund in the header of all pages. The FOUNDATION has set up a special fund with California Federal Bank, San Jose, California that is dedicated exclusively to research. 100% of all contributions
(money, stocks, bequests, corporate sponsorships, etc) made to this fund is distributed among Researchers principally involved with stem cells, angiogenesis inhibitors, and developing the mechanisms and relationships of
lipofuscin, drusen and VEGF processes to the loss of central vision. Anyone interested is contributing to this fund should contact Ed Aleksandrovich at 1-888-607-6552 or visit the DONATIONS Chapter of our web site for
more information.
LINKS Over 750 web sites link to the FOUNDATION's web site. We appreciate that exposure and encourage any of our subscribers who have an association with a web site to include a link to the
MACULAR DEGENERATION FOUNDATION at www.eyesight.org . Our LINKS page contains referrals to selected web sites and anyone may submit recommendations for our consideration.
CONTACT US Our "CONTACT" page
includes a form that may be used to send us a brief message. We enjoy hearing from you and read with interest every email. Unfortunately, we have a limited ability to answer the hundreds of emails received each
week. So, if you don't get a personal reply, please know that we have read and appreciate your correspondence. In addition, because of recent computer virus attacks, we have made it a policy to delete email attachments.
Please include all text in the body of your message or mail documents to our Post Office box.
More features are planned for the web site which will be announced in future issues of the MAGNIFIER. We appreciate
your support and look forward to remaining the best, most reliable source on the Internet for information regarding macular degeneration and related low vision conditions.
Thank you,
Ed Alexsandrovich
