HARVARD ANGIOGENESIS INHIBITOR RESEARCH PROJECT

Macular Degeneration Foundation has begun to contribute research funds to Harvard Medical School.  A team of scientists at Harvard, including our Dr. Robert J. D'Amato (the Foundation's  Director of Clinical Research) has identified Cytochalasin E, an angiogenesis inhibitor.

Angiogenesis is the formation or growth of new blood vessels. In the most severe form of age-related macular degeneration (known as "wet" ARMD) abnormal angiogenesis occurs under the retina resulting in irreversible loss of vision. The loss of vision is due to scarring of the retina secondary to the bleeding from the new blood vessels.  The Harvard researchers propose that Cytochalasin E and analogs may be useful for the treatment of angiogenesis-dependent diseases like the "wet" form of macular degeneration.

The following link will load a PDF document (Requires Adobe Reader).  It provides technical background information published in March of 2000.  An encouraging update is pending and we will publish it both here and on our web site (www.eyesight.org) as soon as it becomes available.

The Macular Degeneration Foundation is very careful about the placement of research funds. While they cannot guarantee results, this work by the Department of Surgical Research and Ophthamology, Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA is definitely a worthy cause.  We ask readers of this newsletter to consider a donation of any size sent to:

MICROCURRENT STIMULATION

Microcurrent stimulation has been used by mainstream medicine for years. However, its use as a treatment for macular degeneration has been limited to the fringes of medicine. The Foundation decided to study all available science and anecdotal evidence. We were very encouraged by what we learned and will be making an annoucement in the near future regarding how people with certain forms of macular degeneration may acquire a microcurrent stimulator for personal use.
