Research for Real Solutions

Towards the Conquest of Macular Degeneration

Out of greater understanding comes the seeds of solutions. Macular degeneration is the least understood and also the least researched of all the eye diseases. The MDF's core commitment as an organization is to the structuring and supporting the conduct of focused research executed by the finest talent available.

Our overall research priorities are framed by those of our colleagues at the National Eye Institute - that division of the National Institutes of Health responsible for Federal supported eye research in the United States.

The Truth about Macular Degeneration Research:
Science versus Snake Oil.

Because so little is known about macular degeneration, it is a magnet for marketers of unorthodox, untested, unproven "treatments." "Treatments" for which there is no sound scientific basis. For most of these "treatments", those that propose them are seeking no scientific validation. In desperation, people with macular degeneration are willing to try almost anything, and almost anything is offered, sometimes for a very steep price. Our goal is to find real solutions to macular degeneration for its victims. MDF believes there is only one truly dependable path to real solutions: well-conceived, carefully performed, rigorously analyzed research, done by highly able professional scientists.

To deliver real solutions to macular degeneration as soon as possible we encourage you to support the MDF Research for Real Solutions Program. This research program is dedicated to planning and conducting result-oriented, focused research by top macular degeneration researchers both in the US and internationally. The Director of Basic Science Research is Dr. Philip Filner, Ph.D. and the Consulting Director of Clinical Research is Robert D'Amato, MD, Ph.D., a leading Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School.

About the Macular Degeneration Foundation's Research for Real Solutions Program.

The MDF is undertaking to structure, supervise and support carefully targeted, rigorous research by the nation's top physicians and researchers in the field of macular degeneration. The research is directed towards five principal objectives:

First, since so little is known about the natural history of macular degeneration we have committed ourselves to helping collect the first comprehensive national database of critical variables that can shine a light on the many aspects of this perplexing disease. You can help us immeasurably by participating in this online survey (link to survey). All names will be kept confidential.

Second, it is critically important that we understand the biology of normal macular function so that weekend better understand what can go wrong and what does go wrong in the various forms of macular degeneration.

Third, we need to better understand the emerging role that abnormal genes play in producing this disease. Research shows partially supported by the foundation have recently identified a promising cluster of genes that could hold important clues to disease causation and progress.

Fourth, we need to develop a dynamic model of potential mechanisms via which macular degeneration occurs. Unlike in other diseases, scientists studying macular degeneration are still struggling to develop an appropriate and accurate animal model.

Fifth, we need to conduct structured research into optimal low vision rehabilitation approaches. This includes programs to evolve vision enhancement technology of which transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or microcurrent stimulation therapy may play a role.

About MDF's Research Programs

MDF uses its scientific and support network, which include some of the academic and biomedical world's top minds, to develop research protocols that fit with the Program's five objectives and to execute the work required cost and time-effectively.

Your support will assist MDF in accelerating all four programs and help save the sight of millions of Americans. Support at every level is appropriately acknowledged, appreciated and rewarded with a tax deduction to the full extent of the law.
