This poem was written by the mother of Nancy Kearney. The story about Nancy and her two sons,
Matt and Kyle, was highlighted on our Web Site
in January, 2002. When Nancy's mother was told of the quest to help Macular Degeneration, and the
tragedy that befell Matt's teacher, Suzan Armstrong, she was inspired to write the following poem:
Macular Degeneration My Eyes
God has given me many gifts in life
So much I can't recall But now I realize my eyes Are the greatest gift of all.
My ears to hear, my mouth to speak All treasure I agree
But these can't take the place at all Of the ability to see.
Forgive me for selfishly Abusing such a jewel So many things my eyes passed by I truly was a fool.
I took for granted every thing I looked upon each day. My eyes never lingered As I went about my way.
To see flowers and trees, birds and sky
And especially my family. And now I pray that There will be a cure for me and
The sixty million people in our world With this disease I never knew
To fight Macular Degeneration now We all depend on you.
The M.D. foundation, researchers and Volunteers, who devote their time And love so faithfully
Hand in hand across our land Will come the hope for us To see
