Insect Bite Improved My Vision
While I was on vacation, in a remote tropical rainforest area, I was stung by an insect on the top of my right foot. At first, the reaction to the sting seemed to have felt similar in nature to previous insect bites; however, the initial bite caused quite a bit more pain than in the past. The pain was sharp and quick, then subsided within a few hours into a small throbbing sensation, which could be attributed to the fact I put my shoes back on and was on my feet the rest of the day. This incident occurred approximately 2:30 PM, the shoe remained on my foot until I went to bed Tuesday (June 9th, 10:30 PM). Wednesday morning, I woke to find my foot had swollen around the bite area. It was inflamed with several white hard blisters and a large red area of fluids under the skin. At this point, the skin was stretched tightly over the top area of my right foot causing radiating pain due to the swelling. My wife and I decided to go into town that morning to have breakfast. Along the way, we picked up a local newspaper to read while eating. I do not have macular degeneration, but I need relatively strong reading glasses to see typical newspaper-size print. This morning, I had accidently left them at the place we were staying. While we were waiting for our food I began to look at the paper. When I don't have the reading glasses I usually just read the headlines or larger print. I was 1/2 way through the paper when I came across an article which had a picture of the Air France plane tragedy where they had discovered 22 dead bodies. I then looked at the caption below (in smaller print) and began to read it. As I began to squint, to focus on the smaller print, it became apparent that the letters were in perfect clarity. I was stunned ... I could actually read it just fine, I even stopped squinting!! Still stunned, I then trained my eyes on even smaller print next to the photo (Associated Press byline). I began flipping through the rest the paper to locate even smaller sized print, to which I knew for sure I should or could not read. Again I was stunned, the finest print was as clear as a bell! I then told my wife who was sitting directly across from me that my vision was perfectly clear. She was shocked as well, for she knows that my vision, over the last 6 years, has been slowly deteriorating. I proceeded to give her the paper and challenged her to find something so small I couldn't possibly read. I could even read print that was comparable to font size 4 on the computer. She was unable to stump me, it was incredible, we were both amazed at my vision change. I began to realize something very special was taking place. We then start discussing how this could be happening or what might have caused this change. The only thing different was the nasty insect bite from the day before. We then went back to our place and I took a few pictures of my foot. At that point, the swelling had increased to about 4 times the size it was on Tuesday night and was becoming increasingly painful. Later that day, we decided to head back into town to do some shopping / sightseeing. Prior to leaving I covered the infected area with a butterfly gauze bandage to protect the sore from friction while walking. Throughout the afternoon I continued to grab brochures to test my vision, the effect was still present, my vision was still perfect. My wife also noticed the corners of my jaw bone and neck had swollen as well. I thought nothing of this swelling. A few hours later we were talking on the patio and I had my hand placed along my left jaw bone, on an area where I normally feel a dull tooth ache due to deferred dental work (this ache has been with me for over 4 years). Pressing on the area that is typically sensitive, I suddenly noticed that I had no pain. I continued to press on the area, it wasn't numb, just void of my longstanding pain. That evening we returned to our place and I took my shoe off and realized the inflammation had spread further to the point where I couldn't even move my toes. I then took the bandage off in an attempt to let some air get at it. Later that evening we were visiting with a neighbor who is a nurse. She suggested an ice pack and baking soda to alleviate the pain and swelling. I chose not to follow her advice, as I did not want to alter the effects I was experiencing. Later on, I retired for the evening placing pillows under my ankle to elevate my foot while I slept. Thursday AM; We decided to take it easy to give my foot a rest. I was laying on the couch, I picked up a magazine and began read it. I noticed that my vision was back to being blurry. The swelling was worse then the day before. At this point, I decided to use an ice compress, keep it elevated and stay off my feet. The following day (Friday) my eyes and teeth were pretty much as they had been prior to the insect bite, and the swelling was beginning to subside. Later that day, my wife and I decided to revisit the exact location where the insect bite occurred to collect any type of insect in that area. I was able to locate the specimens and I placed in zip lock baggies. I also preserved the the butterfly bandage which was soaked in the excretions from the sore. I also have taken pictures to better document this strange event. There were also a few other minor effects I noticed that seemed beneficial which I later noticed too. We returned from our vacation late Saturday (June 13th, 2009) evening. It seems somewhat crazy to me to have experienced these effects. However, this was truly an amazing thing that happened and I can't just let this pass as a fluke or freak happenstance. Many people could benefit from this biotoxin in several ways. I must admit for a few days with the exception of my foot, I felt fantastic!
